Welcome to the TOKYO FREE PARKS website. In this edition, we’re introducing the YOKOJUKKEN-GAWA SHINSUI PARK located in Kita-Sunamachi, Koto Ward. What sets this park apart is its immensely popular free aquatic athletics, especially favored by families with children.
Aquatic Athletics
The aquatic athletics here can be enjoyed throughout the year. Despite being termed “aquatic,” the play equipment is not directly on the river; with a water depth of 25 centimeters, children of elementary school age and above can play independently, while younger toddlers can join with their guardians.
The equipment includes swaying bridges, an athletics course crossing disc platforms, an athletics course progressing by pulling ropes, a zip line, and more – all of surprising quality for a free experience.
Aquatic Athletics Close Days | Every 1st and 15th of the month ※ If these days fall on a weekend or holiday, the closure shifts to the next weekday |
Operating Hours | 9:00 am – 4:30 pm |
Despite the shallow water, there is supervisory staff present, providing a safe environment even when children play by themselves.
Situated in Tokyo’s downtown, the park offers a panoramic view of the Tokyo Skytree from the aquatic athletics area.
Scenic Waterside Park
This park is highly recommended not just for aquatic athletics but also for leisurely strolls. With a theme of “Citizens’ Waterside,” this approximately 1.9km-long water-friendly park along the river is rich in greenery.
Observe birds gathering by the water, take a break on benches near the waterwheel hut, and enjoy a popular spot for nearby residents to relax.
Continuing along the river, you’ll also find a paid boat rental area.
- Rowboats: Capacity of 3 people each
- Pedal boats: Capacity of 2 people each (additional boarding allowed for a single toddler)
- Prices: 100 yen for 30 minutes per boat.
The pathways in the park along the river are also laid out for bicycles, so locals come and go by bike.
