Welcome to TOKYO FREE PARKS! Today, we’d like to introduce you to NISHI ROKUGO PARK, nestled in Ota Ward and affectionately known as the “TIRE PARK.” It is sure to be one of the most instagrammable parks in Tokyo, thanks to its unique feature: an abundance of tires!

In the 1960s, an Ota Ward official had a creative idea that “tires can be used as play equipment.” The ward collected discarded tires from various companies to create this unique park, and there are now 3,000 tires, ranging from ordinary car tires to enormous ones that seem like they could belong on a dump truck.

Among the various cleverly designed pieces of play equipment, the standout is a pair of giant monsters. The larger one is a whopping 8 meters tall, with a length of 20 meters from head to tail, and children are having a blast running around it.

In the sandpit, you’ll find a rocket and a robot with unique shapes.

And you’ll find tires that you can move around in the sandpit, and you can use them to slide down the large slide like a sled.
Tires are also used abundantly for swings, a jungle gym and other play equipments.

A large tire once used on a dump truck has transformed into children’s play equipment. Kids are often seen clinging desperately to it.
