Welcome to TOKYO FREE PARKS, where we introduce you to the finest parks in Tokyo. Today we would like to introduce one of Japan’s oldest parks, ASUKAYAMA PARK. 2023 marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the park. Asukayama Park isn’t just a historic park; it’s also a paradise for children.
Uniquely Designed Playground Equipment
What makes this park truly special is its extensive playground, brimming with enchanting play structures that are guaranteed to delight kids of all ages.

One standout feature is a whimsical, three-story-tall fairy tale castle play structure that soars over 7 meters high. Children can climb its castle slopes and descend via thrilling slides, with multiple slide options for endless fun!

For an exhilarating experience, don’t miss the majestic elephant-shaped slide that makes you feel like you’re riding on the back of a real elephant.
In addition to these attractions, the park features historic exhibits of trams and steam locomotives, both of which were operational until the 1970s. Not only the little ones but even adults can hop on board and imagine a bygone era.
There are also spinning play, boat playground equipment, and swings for more playtime excitement.

For the littlest ones, there are play structures designed with low platforms, cushioned with soft wood chips for added safety and comfort.
Self-Propelled Monorail “Asukargo”

Asukayama Park offers a self-propelled monorail, the “Asukargo,” which is accessible to seniors, persons with disabilities, and those with strollers, and it’s absolutely free to ride. It leisurely ascends the 24-degree slope of the hillside and arrives at the summit in just 2 minutes. The name “Asukargo” is a play on words, combining the similarity of the vehicle to an “escargot” (snail) and “Asukayama.”
Operating Hours: 10:00a.m. – 4:00p.m.
(Note: Service may be suspended in case of strong winds or adverse weather conditions.)
Closed: December 29th – January 3rd
Boarding Locations:

- Asukayama Park Entrance: located immediately after turning left from Oji Station’s central exit.

There’s no fixed timetable; the monorail departs when someone boards.
What’s More…
Scenic Walkways

Around the park, you’ll find picturesque stone-walled paths and charming staircases, making it an excellent spot for leisurely strolls. During spring, 600 cherry blossoms burst into full bloom, turning the park into a cherry blossom viewing haven. In June, hydrangeas decorate the park, while autumn showcases vibrant maple leaves. Depending on when you visit, you’ll experience Japan’s four seasons in this beautiful park.
